AGRA: Arthroscopic surgery is likely to be introduced in the orthopedic department of SN Medical College from June. In the first phase, the procedure will be done only on knees. It will extended to shoulders in the second phase.
Arthroscopy is a surgery on joints that involves minimum invasion. Unlike the traditional open surgery, the joint does not have to be fully opened, which is why the recovery is faster.
The facility at SN Medical will help with biopsy, benefit patients with sports injuries, and those who need foreign parts removed from their body. It is expected to serve around 50,000 to 70,000 denizens, who will be able to avail arthroscopy at Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 at the medical college instead of paying ten times the amount at private hospitals.
HOD at orthopedic department, Dr CP Pal said, “A team of three doctors will conduct arthroscopic surgeries at the department. Also, it will be big saver, especially for poor patients who are unable to afford the treatment at private hospitals.”
The cost of installing the facility is estimated around Rs 48 lakh and a proposal in this regard has been sent to higher officials. Speaking about the initiative, assistant professor at the orthopedic department Dr Rajat Kapoor said, “Five to six patients will be operated on in a week after knee arthroscopy starts at the orthopedic department. In the market, it costs around Rs 50,000 to Rs 70,000, depending on the hospital.”
